Mold Removal Dumpster

Mold removal is dangerous because it can present a potential health risk when done improperly and may even worsen the infestation. Depending on how the remediation is being done in the home, there is a possibility you may need to move out before performing the process because it is harmful to your health.

What is Mold Removal?

Mold removal is a process that involves removing the mold from places of growth.

It is a risky process which should be performed by a professional. But it is possible to do it yourself…if you’re not risk-adverse.

But you should understand that it is very risky. Especially when you are not knowledgeable about mold and mold removal.

The first step of mold remediation, a fancy name for mold removal, is finding the source of the moisture in the house. Once the moisture source is eliminated, you can proceed to the mold removal process. A proper remediation requires implementing certain safety precautions and using special tools.

What About the Moldy Debris?

It is not advisable to carry the debris from mold removal through your home. There is a risk that mold spores will transfer back to the newly cleaned rooms, a condition called cross contamination. Even discarding the contaminated materials in an outdoor garbage can which you store in the garage is not advisable, as it may cause health issues for you and your family. It is best discarded outside of the home.

Do I Need a Special Dumpster?

Unless there is a specific local ordinance you need to follow, a special dumpster for moldy materials is not required. Moving contaminated materials can be dangerous because you release all the spores into the air during the removal process. However, mold is ubiquitous in the outdoors so anything released from the materials in the dumpster will not be detrimental.

So, it is advisable to rent a dumpster to collect and carry all the contaminated debris and materials from your house. If possible, position the dumpster next to the window of the affected area so you can easily discard contaminated debris without carrying it through your house.

If you need to move the moldy materials through the home to get it to a dumpster, then all the material should be bagged and sealed before leaving the containment zone.  This will prevent cross-contamination of the non-affected areas of the home as you remove the damaged materials.

The challenge then becomes, do you have asbestos or lead?

What Are Asbestos and Lead?

Asbestos is typically used for fireproofing and insulation. When inhaled or swallowed, it can cause serious health issues, such as asbestosis, cancer, and mesothelioma.

Lead is a toxic metal and a very strong poison. Lead poisoning is very serious. It builds up in the body over time and is usually found in lead-based wall paint.

What If I Have Asbestos or Lead?

Materials containing asbestos or lead should be put into a sealed, leak-proof container. Many times, the volume of the material might make it impossible to fit into a leak-proof container, so you should dampen the contaminated material to make it more compact.

Use heavy-lift equipment to place contaminated material in the waiting dump truck. You should cover the dump truck with a tarp so debris and dust cannot escape during transport.

Place a large warning sign on the truck stating there is hazardous material in the truck. This will caution people to stay away.

Conclusion

If your home or personal property has been contaminated by mold, it is important to clean and discard all which has been affected.  Even if these things are dear to you, don’t risk your health. Because as they say, ‘your health is your wealth.’

And mold is not the only dangerous contaminant you need to get rid of. Asbestos and lead are also deadly and should be disposed of immediately and safely.
